Well-Balanced Women EVENT

On February 28th we hosted an information seminar on Menopause and Women’s Health. Our panel of experts provided the latest scientific updates and practical tips on nutrition, balancing hormones, how to build strong bones and the pelvic floor specifically for women over 40. We had no idea that laser for the pelvic floor could be such an amazing tool!

Big thanks to our experts - Dr Susan McSweeney from Clinic 66 & Northbridge Medical Practice, Angela Emmerton from Nutrition Matters and our own strong bones expert Kay Fitton.

We’ve had excellent feedback and lots of interest for another event. Some of the comments from women at the event were:

"

….must know information for any woman

"

….best evidence on hormones and menopause from smart women, for smart women!

"

….forget Google! Go to the Physiocise info nights to find out what the real deal is on menopause

Watch this space for a repeat of the night at our Entertainment Quarter practice and for another event at Willoughby in coming terms. Register your interest here now:

The Mindfulness Experiment

Our client - Samantha Olhsen – was part of “The mindfulness experiment” on ABC’s Catalyst, which aired on 19 February. They brought together 15 Australians to see if practising mindfulness can help actually treat conditions like chronic pain, anxiety and stress.

Samantha was medically discharged from the Army 2 years ago due to chronic pain and PTSD. She had previously tried mindfulness in little pieces but didn’t notice much difference so was sceptical prior to the experiment.

"

“A lifetime in the Army had made me an expert at self-criticism to fuel motivation and attention to detail. After a diagnosis of PTSD and chronic pain, this coping mechanism was far from helpful. In fact, it was downright destructive, but it was the only way I knew how to live. Despite psychologists pointing this destructive thought pattern out and attempting to get me to change my thought patterns, I was highly resistant to changing it as I thought without it I would become weak and lazy.”

She describes her journey in terms of the shift from this self-critical, pushy mode of talking to herself to a kind and compassionate one:

"

"The meditation component has been helpful, particularly in improving my concentration and productivity. However, the life-changing part has been using mindfulness techniques throughout my day - noticing my often unhelpful and demeaning ‘self-talk’. I still live with PTSD and chronic pain, but I’m not continually fighting myself, and my thoughts anymore. This is allowing me to let go of the past and of things that are outside of my control and get on with life. I seem to see things more clearly, and it has made dealing with the reality of the life I have a lot easier.”

Mid 2018, before the experiment, Samantha started at Physiocise under the guidance of our Physio – Kate Roberts. Mindfulness, and changing the way we think about how we move, has been a huge focus at Physiocise this term. Although we have known the theory of Mindfulness for some time, Sam’s story has underlined just how effective it can be.

Inspired, our aim is not only to produce better, more fluid and more efficient movement; but to slow the ageing, or shrinking, of the telomeres in our DNA – an amazing mindfulness fact. What our Strong Bones classes can do for bones, the mindfulness in all our classes can do for our brains!

"

“This time last year I could not walk to the bathroom some mornings due to pain.”

A year down the track saw Samantha walk 30km in Coastrek last Friday 15th March. She describes training and finishing the walk as:

"

“One hell of a challenge to overcome!”

What a difference 12 months can make. Congratulations Samantha – we are glad we can support you through this journey. And thank you for helping us to continually evolve our program.

Many people are weighed down by their handbags and what they hold – laptops, phones, chargers, keep cups and wallets. When was the last time you cleaned out your handbag? Entertaining listening for your daily drive home!
