Client Of The Term – Lucille Segal

Despite practising yoga for years, Lucille still felt she still had poor balance and a weak core. Since starting Physiocise seven years ago, her body is not only stronger but is continuing to strengthen! She combines Athlete Burn with Strong Bones classes and loves them.

‘I love feeling strong. Classes keep me stable and remind me to breathe.’ She sometimes slips in a third class moving between Willoughby & Moore Park locations depending on her timetable.

‘Physiocise is not just about my body. It stimulates my brain.’

Her recent addition of our new Strong Bones class has helped her understand how to target her bone strength – ‘I now understand bones need different stimulation for strength than muscles. So I use one class for muscles, and one for my bones.’

Physiocise keeps her strong to do all the things she wants to do…like travel. ‘I’m off overseas for 6 weeks – I can continue my balance in Berlin.’

Does Your Body Need A Tune Up?

Tune Up with Physiocise

Like motorcars, bodies also work better with a tune up. Signs you might need a tune up by booking in a one on one consult with one of our team:

  1. You’ve hit a plateau - things aren't moving along as well as you thought they should
  2. A flare up that has made it difficult to fully participate in class
  3. A new niggle telling you things aren't quite right
  4. Progressing to advanced or prepare for a new challenge

A tune up can give you a targeted program, to ensure your body performs better both in class and everyday life.

We're passionate about helping you get to where you want to be. Your body & brain are constantly being challenged in class, but sometimes there might be small things that are hard to spot in class, that might be missing, so a one on one is often a perfect solution.

Women’s Health At Physiocise

Pelvic floor weakness isn’t just in women, nor is it just after having a baby. You can have problems with your pelvic floor across the spectrum of your life. Young girls, men, athletes, pre or post menopausal women – can all experience issues.

We know it's sometimes hard to reconnect your brain to the right muscles. Research shows many of us don’t perform the correct pelvic floor activation on just verbal instructions alone. So its common we need individual pelvic floor cues to help get our core stronger. This is when a specialised assessment is suggested.

Women's Health Team - Maria, Jemma and Dimity

Our physio’s Jemma McGeachie, Dimity Thompson and Maria King are highly experienced women’s health practitioners and now have brand new facilities to offer pelvic floor assessments at Physiocise.

Currently just at our Willoughby practice, but coming soon to Moore Park. We are excited to announce this great new service for our existing clients. External clients are also welcomed.

Referee Of The Term - Dr Seamus Dalton

You were one of the pioneers of specific exercise for rehabilitation of back pain. When did you first become interested in exercise as medicine?

I started as a shoulder rehabilitation specialist when I did my Fellowship. Shoulders are all about the balance between control of muscles and freedom of movement so I guess that’s where my first passion for using specific exercise to change pain, evolved. Then in the early 90’s Del Maree Day started one of the first Pilates studios in Mosman and I started to see the results that could be gained by improving core stability. In 1995 I met Anna-Louise who with Physiocise had added another layer to the core stability story by working with posture, movement retraining and education specifically for people with those tricky backs that no one else could fix. Soon after we started teaching courses for physios to help them understand the link between posture, muscle activation, habits, pain and the need to not focus only on pathology.

Dr Seamus Dalton
Who is the most common person who comes to see you with chronic back pain?

Generally they have had pain for many years which comes and goes. They have seen lots of other doctors and health professionals and they also have LOTS of scans and test results. They are often looking for a “label” or a diagnosis that says it is one thing…but unfortunately that is never the case and usually I spend a lot of time explaining that there are many layers of things that lead to this point and that there is no quick fix. That’s why I love working with Physiocise as they also understand the complexity of this type of problem.

What are common questions patients ask?
  1. do they need surgery ?
  2. is it ever going to end ?
  3. are they going end up getting much worse ?
  4. why me ?
  5. what can I do, and why is what you're saying any different?

People are understandably anxious and sceptical about solutions. I guess my role is to help them understand that there is a way to get better but it takes time, and practice and the right people to facilitate the changes that will ultimately take the load off.

I am a bit like a gatekeeper for the patient and have in my toolbox a variety of different specialist professionals that I can guide them to get the results we need.

For some people they may need a really good hands on physio, or the right mix of medication or injections to get a pain free window in order to start the process of rehabilitation. Once I work out the plan I then contact the right professionals to be part of the solution and the Physiocise team is often an integral part of that.

STRONG BONES News Flash

There is no ‘magic age’ to start to worry about your bones. We all start to lose bone mass from our mid 30’s. A new report shows one in 20 deaths in 2013 were caused by, or contributed by musculoskeletal conditions like osteoporosis.

MEDICATION has been shown to reduce the risk of fractures by 35%. The great news is that evidence shows EXERCISE can be even more effective, and as part of an overall treatment can reduce fractures by 50%!

‘Bones are a living dynamic tissue that responds to the stresses placed on them, and thus exercise plays a critical role in both the prevention and management of osteoporosis.’ Describes Prof Robin Daly (Chair of Exercise and Ageing, Deakin University).

Normal activities like walking, cycling and swimming are NOT specific enough to build new bone.

Our classes are designed to scientifically activate the body to build new bone and prevent osteoporosis. We also keep you up to date with all the latest research to help you understand all the lifestyle factors that will help like diet, vitamin D and sunshine.

Physiocise Strong Bones classes are great for you if you:

  • have a family history of osteoporosis or osteopaenia
  • are in any stage of menopause
  • had a history of late puberty or loss of periods
  • have a very slight build
  • have history of vitamin deficiencies
  • have Coeliac, Crohn’s or other malabsorptive conditions
  • are post treatment for cancer
